Diabetic Issues

ImageThe facts can be alarming:

  • 60% of amputations are due to diabetes.
  • 20-25% of all diabetics in a lifetime will succumb to an amputation.
  • As of 2008, 150,000 amputations take place per year.

If these statistics scare you, then remember this fact - adult onset diabetes can be avoided with a simple lifestyle change which includes moderate exercise and diet. This is primarily because the increasing rate of obesity in the United States is a direct cause of Adult Onset Diabetes Type II.

Our goal is to maintain diabetic foot health as much as possible in order to avoid the sequelae of diabetic foot infections, ulcerations, and subsequent amputations.

Testing for diabetic neuropathy is performed in the office in order to diagnose nerve damage, secondary to diabetes. The lack of sensation is a direct cause of diabetic foot ulcers. We treat diabetics who experience neuropathic pain as well.

Because of Dr. Milescu's background in both podiatric and wellness, she can assist those prone to diabetes in avoiding the onset of this disease. For those who have already developed diabetes, her care can help manage the effects of the disease and mitigate as many of its effects as possible.

Dr. Milescu also has a willingness to embark on challenging diabetic foot ulcers and infections.

Wound Care

ImageDr. Milesu specializes in the advanced treatment of wounds to the feet. Among the cutting-edge procedures Dr. Milescu employs in-office to aid her patients is the GRAFTJACKET® Matrix which is intended to be placed in chronic skin wounds in the feet of diabetic patients. GRAFTJACKET® Matrix is made from donated human skin, which undergoes a process that removes the epidermis and dermal cells. This process allows the body to accept the matrix and reduces the rejection response.

Dr. Milescu has been a Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association (APWCA) since 2008 and a member of the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care (AAWC) since 2007. Dr. Milescu is board certified in foot surgery by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery since 2004.
